Police: Dad knows where to find girl

Santa Fe police believe the father of a girl wanted for bringing a gun to Santa Fe High School Feb. 4 knows where she is, according to a police spokeswoman.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Caylee Mersereau, 15. Police say she brought a gun to school in her backpack. Sgt. Andrea Dobyns said she threatened another student with the gun and was suspended. Police have not been able to find her.

Caylee?s father, Cainer Mersereau, told police the gun which the girl had at school was a BB gun which he turned over to police.

Dobyns told KOAT Wednesday that police believe Mersereau knows where his daughter is.

The father himself was arrested on Friday on an old warrant for failure to appear in court. He was quickly released on a $100 bond.

Officials to hold meeting in Taos

U.S. Sens. Tom Udall, Martin Heinrich and Rep. Ben Ray Luj?n will be in Taos on Saturday to meet with community representatives and discuss their efforts to protect the R?o Grande del Norte and highlight upcoming legislation to protect the Columbine-Hondo.

The meeting will be 10:45 a.m.-noon at Rivers and Birds, 480 N.M. 150 in Arroyo Seco, and is being hosted by Roberta Salazar, founder and executive director of Rivers and Birds, and John Olivas of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.

Local leaders will tell why the protection of these areas is important for the local communities.

Last week, the federal lawmakers reintroduced a bill to establish the R?o Grande del Norte Conservation Area to protect more than 240,000 acres of BLM-managed lands in Taos and Rio Arriba counties. They have also joined community leaders in asking President Obama to consider designating the area a national monument.

In the last Congress, Udall sponsored legislation to grant the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area permanent wilderness status. It borders the Wheeler Peak Wilderness within the Carson National Forest and is a major water source for New Mexico rivers and acequias. The bill, which Udall plans to reintroduce in the 113th Congress, would provide the area permanent protection.

Construction to affect parking

Eleven parking meters along the south side of East Alameda from Don Gaspar to Shelby Street in Santa Fe will be removed for sidewalk construction.

Work is expected to last until Saturday afternoon, when the meters will be reinstalled. Drivers are urged to stay clear of the construction and park at one of the nearby city parking lots on Water Street or the Sandoval parking garage.

Teen applications being accepted

Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center is accepting applications from Santa Fe County high school students for the summer Healthcare Exploration Program, which allows students to explore a wide range of health care careers through an intensive hands-on, paid experience.

The program provides students with education, direct observation, clinical rotations, and career guidance to encourage them to pursue careers in health care.

The program is divided into two levels: Level One is open to students in grades nine-11 and provides an overview and introduction to a health care career. Level Two is for students in grades 11-12 who have completed Level One. HEP participants meet on weekdays for four weeks in the summer for six hours each day.

The application can be downloaded at www.stvin.org. For information, contact the HEP coordinator, Louise Yakey, at 505-913-4995 or louise.yakey@stvin.org.

Application deadline is March 22.
