JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Worried about horse meat in your beef? Try water buffalo, donkey and goat.
South African food scientists said they have found all three in mislabeled foods including beef burgers, ground beef and sausages.
A study published by three professors at Stellenbosch University found that 68 percent of 139 samples contained species not declared in the product label, with the highest incidence in sausages, burger patties and deli meats.
The study found soya and gluten were not labeled in 28 percent of products tested, it found undeclared pork in 37 percent and chicken in 23 percent.
"This study confirms that the mislabeling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labeling regulations but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts," co-author Professor Louwrens C. Hoffman said Tuesday.
He said tests the past two weeks on hundreds of samples of imported meat have found no horse meat.
The study, published in the latest edition of the European journal Food Control, tested compliance with new labeling laws introduced in South Africa nearly a year ago. Hoffman said it had taken years to get the legislation passed because of opposition from producers and "we are picking up the feeling that the industry is not acting on the new legislation."
He added: "We've picked up the vibe that people take all kinds of offcuts and mince it to make a sausage."
The chief executive officer of South Africa's Red Meat Producers' Association, Gerhard Schutte, called for the culprits to be prosecuted, complaining "they are giving our products a bad name."
South Africa has some of the choicest beef, lamb, pork and chicken in the world, but a complicated chain from the farm gate means products could be contaminated with other products from the abattoir to meat packers and also in the many meats imported into the country.
Hoffman said his samples for the study all were of local meat acquired from supermarkets and butchers. He said most large supermarkets hold their suppliers accountable, doing in house tests and sending samples to Stellenbosch University for verification.
He said it would not cost much for the meat industry to comply with South African labeling laws.
"It's all about people having the right to know" what they are eating, he said. "There's nothing wrong with eating donkey if you like donkey, but if you don't, you have the right to know" it is in your burger pattie or sausage.

A senior staffer for Rep Jim Himes, D-CT4, confirmed late Wednesday that Himes will serve as finance chair for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the current election cycle.
The DCCC will make the announcement Thursday morning.

By August 2012, Samsung had sold 10 million units. Now the handset industry is set to face the onslaught of an armada of copycats. Huawei?s Ascend P2. ZTE?s Grand Memo. UMI?s X2. HTC?s (2498)?One. Sony?s (SNE)?Xperia ZL. And on and on. These smartphones all have display sizes ranging from 4.7 inches to 5.7 inches, and most of them are fairly close copies of the Note concept.

The handset market often gets flooded with a glut of models when a new technology or a design approach starts to get trendy. It happened with the first generation of 256-color displays more than a decade ago; and with the massive waves of first 1.3-megapixel camera phones and then 5-megapixel camera phones; and with touchscreen phones in 2008, a year after the first iPhone became a sensation.

But what may be different this time around is that there is considerable doubt about the grace period of premium pricing. A decade or even five years ago, handset vendors tried to hold the line on pricing when it came to new product niches. Relatively high-end vendors like Nokia (NOK), Motorola and Sony Ericsson had enough clout with operators to keep the overall pricing environment relatively benign.
In 2013, the handset market looks radically different. Low-end vendors from Asia have far more clout and their power is growing rapidly. Huawei?s global smartphone market share has already hit 5%. A trio of low-end Asian vendors tripled their smartphone market share in urban India between June and December, reaching 12%. ZTE is making major inroads in Western Europe. Latin America is getting flooded by budget brands from Spice to Micromax.
This time around, there may not be much time for high-end vendors to capitalize on the growing popularity of smartphones equipped with 5- to 6-inch displays. Micromax is already selling a 5-inch phone in India for under $220. UMI is now launching its X2 model with an ambitious 13-megapixel camera?at $260. The quality of phones from budget vendors has improved radically over the past three years, partly because phones can now be designed so easily from off-the-shelf component suites. Nobody needs advanced in-house antenna design anymore.
This sheer number of jumbo smartphones is intimidating also because nobody really knows how great the demand is. Samsung?s?Galaxy Note models did great business in 2012 partly because there was very little competition. The fact that Samsung managed to sell more than 15 million phablets in a year does not mean that the global market can absorb a dozen new models in the same category ? particularly if Apple debuts an iPhone with 4.8-inch screen in early summer.
The industry clearly underestimated the demand for phablets in 2011 and 2012. If the past is any indication, it will now cheerfully swing to overestimating phablet demand in 2013. Once all these models ramp up over the spring, we are likely to witness truly eye-popping prices over the summer ? unless the overall consumer demand really shifts decisively towards the phablet. As cool as a 5-inch display looks, it is hard to envision it as the dominant form factor.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal health regulators have halted Amgen's studies of its drug Sensipar after the death of a 14-year-old patient in a company trial.
The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it is still gathering information about the death, but has shut down all studies of the drug in children.
Sensipar is approved in adults to treat over-activity of the parathyroid gland, which can lead to brittle bones, kidney stones and abdominal pain. It has been used since 2004 to treat symptoms of chronic kidney disease and parathyroid cancer.
Amgen Inc. had been studying the drug to see whether it works in children.
The Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based company said in a statement that it "is working as rapidly as possible to understand the circumstances of what happened."
The FDA said on its website that it is unclear whether Amgen's drug had a role in the patient's death, but it is reminding doctors to prescribe it carefully.
The drug is known to lower calcium levels, sometimes to a dangerous extent.
The agency says doctors should monitor patients' calcium levels monthly to make sure they don't fall to dangerous levels. Signs of a calcium deficiency include muscle cramping, convulsions and burning or prickling sensations.
The most common side effects of the drug in adults include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Amgen reported annual sales of $800 million for Sensipar in 2011, its most recent full-year financial report.
Company shares fell 7 cents to $89.48 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

BERLIN (AP) ? A survey has found that consumer confidence in Germany, Europe's biggest economy, is edging higher as shoppers feel more optimistic about the country's future.
The GfK research institute says Wednesday that its forward-looking confidence indicator stands at 5.9 points for March ? up from 5.8 in February.
It says consumers' economic expectations continued to brighten amid predictions that economic growth will return in the current quarter after declining in the October-December period.
Their optimism is being fed by a solid job market. Unemployment stood at 7.4 percent in January. That compares favorably with some of the countries worst-hit by Europe's debt crisis.
GfK says the labor-market situation will be key to determining how consumer confidence develops this year.

The Radio 4 programme Woman?s Hour recently published its list of the UK?s most powerful women.?
Out of the 100 women featured on the Power List, just four were from the world of sport: Clare Balding, Karren Brady, Heather Rabbatts and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.
The top twenty was ranked in order of power and was topped, somewhat bizarrely in my view, by HM The Queen.
The other 80 were listed in alphabetical order, and the sporting four featured in this group.
But what is power and how can it be measured?
The Woman?s Hour website?s?definition?was based on a list of questions:
?Which women have the biggest impact on our economy, society, politics and culture?
?Who has the ability to inspire change as a role model or a thinker?
?Does power boil down to having the money to make things happen?
?Has new technology changed what it is to be powerful??
The Woman?s Hour Power List, the site continued, looked at ?the achievements of British women across public life and offer some measure of the progress women have made in society?.
It hoped to ?shine a light on the top female politicians, business women and leaders in their field ? from areas as diverse as finance, education, health, engineering and the arts?.
And it asked how much power these women have in modern Britain.
Anyone could be nominated via an online form. The nominees were then judged by a panel comprising Eve Pollard, former Woman?s Hour editor Jill Burridge, Baroness Oona King, writer Val McDermid, journalist Dawn O?Porter and Priti Patel MP.
In addition to this, ?expert witnesses? could be called to advise on specific areas.
I was going to put a name forward, but I wasn?t quite sure where or if sport would fit into it.
I was glad to see four did actually make the list, but there could have been so many more.
So, if you?ll indulge me, I?d like to mention a few outstanding women from sport who I think should have made the list.
But first, a look at the four women who did make it.
They are a diverse group, coming at their roles from varying angles, but with a shared love of sport and a will to influence the future.
Clare Balding was a figure of ridicule when she started her broadcasting career.
She still has her detractors, but they are now in a minority and Balding is undoubtedly a rising star.
She has gone from being ?the horsey one? to being able to show a real depth of knowledge in everything she covers. Her stock rose greatly during the London Olympics when her hard work clearly paid off with universal acknowledgement as one of the best broadcasters around.
Since then she seems to have gained confidence and is not afraid to make comments on wider issues pertaining to women.
On the Radio 4 website Balding is quoted as saying, ?I think ?ambitious? is one of those adjectives used for women in a derogatory way.
?And, yet, I think ambition is crucial in life ? you have to know what you might be capable of and push yourself slightly beyond it.?
Karren Brady crosses effortlessly between the worlds of business and sport.
She came to public prominence when she became the first female Managing Director of a football club at Birmingham City from 1993 to 2009.
Since then she has featured on Alan Sugar?s ?The Apprentice?, while maintaining her links with football, becoming vice-chair of West Ham United in January 2010.
She has spoken out against sexism in business and in sport and continues to campaign on the issue.
In an interview with the Telegraph in 2012 she said, ?I don?t feel any shame in saying I enjoy my work.? I do.
?There are two things important to me: my children and my work.? I won?t give either up.?
Heather Rabbatts CBE is another woman equally at home in business and sport.
After spells as chief executive at the London boroughs of Lambeth, Merton and Hammersmith and Fulham she turned her attention to football, becoming Executive Deputy Chair of Millwall FC in 2006.
In 2012 she became the first female board member at the Football Association (FA).
She is also a trustee of the Royal Opera House and sits on several other boards.
She has broken through spectacularly in the notoriously male-dominated world of football.
In an interview with The Independent?following?her appointment at Millwall, Rabbatts said, ?Given football is the national game and such a huge part of our cultural life, women should have a bigger part in it.
?When you look at the people running it on the FA Council, where the average age is about 65 and there?s only one woman out of 93, you think, ?Come on guys, get real.
?More and more women are going to football. Don?t you need to embrace us??
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson competed in five Paralympic Games, winning 16 medals, of which 11 were gold.
Since her retirement from competitive sport in 2007 she has carved out a career in television.
She is also a non-executive director of UK Athletics and is on the board of the London Marathon.
She was made a life peer in 2010, and speaks not only on disability issues, but more recently has used her time in the House of Lords to contribute to the Welfare Reform and Legal Aid Bills.
So, these are the four women to whom we can look to make a difference and to fight for a greater role for women?s sport and women?s role within sport.
As for my choices, top of the list is Sue Tibballs, CEO of the Women?s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF).
Her profile is steadily increasing as she is called upon for a pertinent comment whenever the future of women?s sport or the state of women?s fitness is discussed.
The WSFF website is awash with excellent initiatives to get women more active. When searching for an ?expert? opinion, it is one of the first sources I turn to.
Commenting on WSFF?s ?She Moves??campaign, Tibballs said, ?We know that women have busy lives and often lack the time or motivation to invest in getting fit and making themselves feel good.
?Women are finding it harder than ever to prioritise exercise while they are facing the pressures of work, childcare and running homes?
??As a mother myself, I know that big life events like having a child or starting a new job can create real barriers to staying active, and we want to bring women together to motivate each other to stay fit and healthy.?
My second choice? England cricket captain?Charlotte Edwards.
Despite suffering surprise losses in the last two international tournaments, Edwards has been exemplary in her conduct both on and off the field.
She became the first woman to join the MCC World Cricket Committee, in May 2012 and will be a real force to be reckoned with when promoting women?s cricket in this traditionally conservative world.
Indeed, cricket is one sport in which women are, at last, making an impact. Things are changing with pace. I considered several candidates from cricket, who could not only have the potential to be movers and shakers in the game, but could influence policy with regard to the promotion of sport and physical activity to a wider audience.
These include former England captain Clare Connor, the first female member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) cricket committee, and the woman who did it all first and is still influential,?Rachael Heyhoe-Flint.
Now Baroness Heyhoe-Flint, she was elected to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2010. She was the first woman to be inducted to the ICC Hall of Fame.
Hope Powell, the England women?s football manager could also have made it onto the list. She has been instrumental in the regeneration of the women?s game in this country.
And finally, cyclist Lizzie Armistead. Never afraid to voice an opinion, Armistead has shown herself to be confident and erudite when discussing the gender gap in cycling.
She has already taken on an unofficial role as an advocate for women?s cycling equality.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Armistead was forthright in her views, saying, ?The sexism I have encountered in my career can get quite overwhelming and very frustrating.?
The thing that strikes me is that not one of the names on the official list operates solely in sport. This is in direct contrast to my own suggestions and implies that excellence in one field is not enough when that field is sport.
It is a shame that this seems to be the case as this is not the impression given by the definition quoted.
However, it is good to see sport represented.
Those of us who are passionate about women?s sport and about sport in general can only follow the careers of these four women who did make the 100 list with interest.

This week is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, dedicated to raising awareness about anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder, and other conditions that involve preoccupations with food and weight.
Think you know what an eating disorder is all about? You may not.
Research by Oxford University suggests that eating disorders remain poorly understood by the general public and even health professionals.
Sure, some symptoms are obvious?say, weight loss or purging after eating?but others are less so.
In order to identify the sometimes subtle symptoms of an eating disorder and encourage someone to seek help, here are five surprising facts you should know.
It?s not just teens and young women
Many people assume that only teenage and young adult women develop eating disorders?but increasingly, doctors are seeing more and more cases in women and men of all ages, even in children and the middle aged. A recent study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found a lack of awareness about male eating disorders often prevented diagnosis and treatment?even though men and boys account for about 25% of cases.
?I have started to see a lot more women in their 40s and up who come to me with eating disorders,? says Jodi Rubin, a therapist in New York City and adjunct lecturer at the NYU Silver School of Social Work. Often times, these later-in-life disorders are triggered by a major life change?leaving or re-entering the work force, getting a divorce, or having a baby, for example.
You can?t tell by looking at someone
An eating disorder can be hard to spot: Bulimia and anorexia symptoms traditionally include dramatic weight loss, but it?s also possible to have disordered eating while maintaining a normal body weight, says Rubin. Binge eaters, in fact, may even be overweight, or may repeatedly shed and then pack on pounds.
?Eating disorders are about control and self esteem as much as they are about the number on the scale,? she says. Someone with an eating disorder may work hard to keep their weight at a certain number as to not ?let on? that he or she has a problem, for example.
There are as many emotional symptoms as there are physical
Sure there are plenty of visible cues that someone might have an eating disorder: Along with weight loss, people who severely restrict calories or nutrients may experience thinning hair, dry skin, and?in the case of a purging disorder?swollen cheeks.
But the emotional signs of an eating disorder may be easier to spot, if you know what to look for. At their root, almost all eating disorders are symptoms of depression or self-esteem issues, says Rubin. You may notice that a friend or loved one has become moody, uptight, anxious, or is expressing self-doubt and shame?either about his or her body, or about life in general.
Strange behaviors might be a clue
Newly adopted rituals can also be a sign that a person?s relationship with food has taken an unhealthy turn. A friend may begin to obsessively count calories, focus only on specific foods or food groups, or avoid making spontaneous plans, or stop eating with other people altogether. When you do eat together, he or she may exhibit unusual food behaviors?using a lot of condiments, or fixating on strange food combinations, for example.
For people hyper-focused on their weight and body image, a preoccupation with exercise often goes along with an eating disorder, as well. It?s normal to want to burn off excess calories after a big meal, but if a friend seems to panic after missing one workout, that?s a red flag.
Calling someone out may not help
Many people with eating disorders are in denial about their problem, says Rubin; some are even proud of the control they are able to exert over their bodies. By bringing up food or weight issues you?ve noticed with a friend, he or she may tell you that you?re imagining it, or that there?s nothing to worry about.
Instead, try talking about the emotional issues: ?If you say, ?I?ve noticed you seem depressed lately,? they?re not really able to deny that,? says Rubin. And even if they don?t come clean and agree to seek help then and there, they?ll remember that you?ve expressed concern and that you?re a safe place to go when they?re ready to talk.

Feb. 26, 2013 ? An international team led by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has documented a 78 percent decline in the number of nests of the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at the turtle's last stronghold in the Pacific Ocean.
The study, published online Feb. 26 in the Ecological Society of America's scientific online journal Ecosphere, reveals leatherback nests at Jamursba Medi Beach in Papua Barat, Indonesia -- which accounts for 75 percent of the total leatherback nesting in the western Pacific -- have fallen from a peak of 14,455 in 1984 to a low of 1,532 in 2011. Less than 500 leatherbacks now nest at this site annually.
Thane Wibbels, Ph.D., a professor of reproductive biology at UAB and member of a research team that includes scientists from State University of Papua (UNIPA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia, says the largest marine turtle in the world could soon vanish.
"If the decline continues, within 20 years it will be difficult if not impossible for the leatherback to avoid extinction," said Wibbels, who has studied marine turtles since 1980. "That means the number of turtles would be so low that the species could not make a comeback.
"The leatherback is one of the most intriguing animals in nature, and we are watching it head towards extinction in front of our eyes," added Wibbels.
Leatherback turtles can grow to six feet long and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. They are able to dive to depths of nearly 4,000 feet and can make trans-Pacific migrations from Indonesia to the U.S. Pacific coast and back again.
While it is hard to imagine that a turtle so large and so durable can be on the verge of extinction, Ricardo Tapilatu, the research team's lead scientist who is a Ph.D. student and Fulbright Scholar in the UAB Department of Biology, points to the leatherback's trans-Pacific migration, where they face the prevalent danger of being caught and killed in fisheries.
"They can migrate more than 7,000 miles and travel through the territory of at least 20 countries, so this is a complex international problem," Tapilatu said. "It is extremely difficult to comprehensively enforce fishing regulations throughout the Pacific."
The team, along with paper co-author Peter Dutton, Ph.D., discovered thousands of nests laid during the boreal winter just a few kilometers away from the known nesting sites, but their excitement was short-lived.
"We were optimistic for this population when year round nesting was discovered in Wermon Beach, but we now have found out that nesting on that beach appears to be declining at a similar rate as Jamursba Medi," said Dutton, head of the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center's Marine Turtle Genetics Program.
The study has used year-round surveys of leatherback turtle nesting areas since 2005, and it is the most extensive research on the species to date. The team identified four major problems facing leatherback turtles: nesting beach predators, such as pigs and dogs that were introduced to the island and eat the turtle eggs; rising sand temperatures that can kill the eggs or prevent the production of male hatchlings; the danger of being caught by fisheries during migrations; and harvesting of adults and eggs for food by islanders.
Tapilatu, a native of western Papua, Indonesia, has studied leatherback turtles and worked on their conservation since 2004. His efforts have been recognized by NOAA, and he will head the leatherback conservation program in Indonesia once he earns his doctorate from UAB and returns to Papua.
He has worked to educate locals and limit the harvesting of adults and eggs. His primary focus today is protecting the nesting females, eggs and hatchlings. A leatherback lays up to 10 nests each season, more than any other turtle species. Tapilatu is designing ways to optimize egg survival and hatchling production by limiting their exposure to predators and heat through an extensive beach management program.
"If we relocate the nests from the warmest portion of the beach to our egg hatcheries, and build shades for nests in other warm areas, then we will increase hatching success to 80 percent or more," said Tapilatu.
"The international effort has attempted to develop a science-based nesting beach management plan by evaluating and addressing the factors that affect hatching success such as high sand temperatures, erosion, feral pig predation and relocating nests to maximize hatchling output," said Manjula Tiwari, a researcher at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, Calif.
Wibbels, who is also the Ph.D. advisor for Tapilatu, says that optimizing hatchling production is a key component to leatherback survival, especially considering the limited number of hatchlings who survive to adulthood.
"Only one hatchling out of 1,000 makes it to adulthood, so taking out an adult makes a significant difference on the population," Wibbels said. "It is essentially the same as killing 1,000 hatchlings."
The research team believes that beach management will help to decrease the annual decline in the number of leatherback nests, but protection of the leatherbacks in waters throughout the Pacific is a prerequisite for their survival and recovery. Despite their prediction for leatherback extinction, the scientists are hopeful this species could begin rebounding over the next 20 years if effective management strategies are implemented.

"Anticipation," he said, "may be the motor that keeps fads running in circles. It could be a source of the violent swings that we see in financial markets. Anyone in a bidding war on eBay may have been caught in this dynamic. If the bidders are tweaking their increasing bids based on the tweaks of others, then the whole group may converge in price and determine how those prices rise. The process isn't governed by the intrinsic value of that mint-condition Star Wars lunch box, but on the collective dynamics of people trying to reason through each other's thoughts."
Robert Goldstone, professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, said they wanted "an elegant parable in a laboratory context" of the kind of real-world situations when people are trying to assess what other people are deciding. The researchers are interested in what the entire group looks like when everybody is trying to second guess everybody else.
"At a core level," he said, "people's guesses do converge, and that's interesting because dominant models suggest otherwise."
Nash equilibrium, for example -- the influential theory of John Nash, a mathematician portrayed in several films and the book "A Beautiful Mind" -- would predict that everyone will end up at random places with equal probability for each round. It's a theory, Goldstone said, "that assumes full rationality, full ability to reason about what you know I know you know I know."
Instead, "we are getting this systematic behavior, which is not random," he said. "Even though people are trying to beat each other out, they end up in synchrony."
Whether looking at benign social habits or mass panics, Frey and Goldstone conclude, social theorists have always treated group behavior as though it resulted from a kind of mindlessness. But this lesson from rock-paper-scissors suggests that the most sophisticated reasoning can be caught up in the subtleties of social interaction.
Rock-paper-scissors revisited
In the experiment, Frey and Goldstone introduce a version of rock-paper-scissors they call "the mod game." In each round, they gave small groups of five or six IU psychology undergraduates a choice of numbers from 1 and 24. Participants earned money for picking a number exactly one greater than a number chosen by someone else, with the choices wrapped around in a circle so that 1 beat 24.
Each student had to anticipate what others were going to pick, and pick the next number up, keeping in mind that everyone else was thinking the same thing. In this game of one-upmanship, the best performers aren't the ones who think the most steps ahead, but the ones who think just the right number of steps ahead -- about two, as it turned out in the experiment.
Experimental economists predict that sufficiently experienced people will continually increase the number of steps by which they think ahead. But this did not happen in the mod game. Instead, when participants were shown each previous round's results, they tended to cluster in one part of the circle of choices and start bounding around it in sync. Groups produced a compelling periodic orbit around the choices, reminiscent of the cultural pendulum swinging back and forth, bringing, say, mustaches in and out of fashion.
The cycling behavior consistently got faster with time. With more experience, people learned to think further ahead, so the economic prediction was partly correct. But the increase was much less dramatic than economists might have thought: After 200 rounds of the mod game, the average number of thinking steps increased by only half a step, from 2 to 2.5. Moreover, the synchronicity that occurs in this game turned out to benefit everyone; a tighter grouping of choices meant a higher density of money to be earned in each round.

In 2010, Aaron Swartz, a 26-year-old computer programmer and founder of Reddit, downloaded thousands of scholarly articles from the online journal archive JSTOR. He had legal access to the database through his research fellowship at Harvard University; he also, however, had a history of dramatic activism against pay-for-content online services, having previously downloaded and released roughly 100,000,000 documents from the PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) database, which charges eight cents per page to access public files. Given his status as a prominent ?hacktivist? and the sheer quantity of files involved, law enforcement agents concluded that Swartz planned to distribute the cache of articles and indicted him on multiple felony counts carrying a possible sentence of $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison.
Swartz was slated to go to trial this year but committed suicide in early January, prompting a public outcry against the prosecution in his case. Swartz was a prominent voice in the heated debate surrounding modern copyright law and public access and use (see his 2008 ?Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto?).
