Titanic Exhibit Gives Life to Ship's Passengers

PHILADELPHIA ? When you first enter "Titanic: the Artifact Exhibit" at the Franklin Institute, you are given a ticket with the name of somebody who was actually aboard the ill-fated ship. My ticket bore the name of Mr. Paul Romaine M. L. Chevr?, a first-class passenger who was a successful sculptor. He was on his way to Canada to celebrate the opening of a hotel where one of his statues was to be unveiled in late April 1912.

Immediately after you enter, you get to see what an ordeal it must have been to build the magnificent vessel; there are photos of the throngs of workers at the dockyard in Belfast, Ireland, and tons of information about all of the work that went into building the Titanic. (It took more than two years to assemble a ship 882 feet ? 270 m ? long, or more than four city blocks, and more than 92 feet ? 28 meters ? high.)

Next you get to see some of the 300 of the exhibit's artifacts that were brought up by remotely operated vehicles from the wreck, including dishware, metal sconces, light bulbs and personal effects like combs and spectacles. The artifacts and signs on the wall allow you to imagine what it must have been like to be aboard the ocean liner. ?[Titanic Quiz: Fact or Fiction]

Reliving the Titanic experience

Notable is the difference between first, second and third class, with the best kitchenware and d?cor reserved for those able or willing to pay for it. There are re-created first-class and second-class cabins, and a replica of the grand staircase, the "social hub" of the ship.

You get to know some of the prominent passengers, such as John Jacob Astor IV, one of the wealthiest men in the world at that time. One thing that surprised me was the large number of second- and third-class passengers who boarded the ship looking for a better life in America during a coal strike in England.

?

Bringing to life the passengers was a main motivation of the exhibit, said Steve Snyder, vice president of exhibits at the Franklin Institute. "It weaves together the actual objects on the ship with the actual people who were there," he told OurAmazingPlanet. "That's the real power of the exhibit. It's a true authentic experience; it's not about an imaginative story."

Final hours

Then you walk through the infamous final hours of the Titanic, beginning with a sign bearing an ominous cable from a nearby ship, the Californian, sent at 10:55 p.m. on April 14, 1912: "Ice report: We are stopped and surrounded by ice." Of course the captain of the Titanic, Edward Smith, and First Officer William Murdoch did not heed these warnings, steaming ahead near full-speed. About 45 minutes later they would strike an iceberg, which would fill the boat with water and cause the Titanic to sink only 2 hours and 40 minutes later. [Video: How Exactly Did Titanic Sink? - With James Cameron ]

One particularly striking artifact is a pair of binoculars, which might have helped the watchmen on the lookout for icebergs had they not been misplaced during the final preparations of the vessel, only to be found decades later on the bottom of the ocean.

The exhibit records these final hours very well, illustrating the scale of the disaster and bringing the victims and survivors to life. We learn, for example, that Astor didn't survive, as he didn't take seriously the reports that the ship was sinking, and later wasn't allowed onto a lifeboat due to a "women and children first" policy. (His pregnant wife did survive, however.) We also hear stories of heroism and sacrifice. One notable tidbit is a statement from Ida Straus to her husband, who had encouraged her to get on a lifeboat: "Where you go, I go." The couple would die together. (He was 67, she was 63.)

We learn a little bit about the discovery of the wreck by Robert Ballard, and the difficulty of bringing up the artifacts, which were all slowly disintegrating at the bottom of the ocean. It was astonishing how much material actually did survive, including playing cards, postcards, bottles of wine and clothing. Many of the artifacts were sealed inside leather suitcases, often with identifying information that allowed the exhibitors to connect them to individual passengers' stories, Snyder said.

Ice cold

In the last room of the exhibit is a large, iceberg-like chunk of frozen water that visitors are encouraged to touch. This is, of course, how cold the water was on the frigid April night of the Titanic's demise. The room also contains the possessions of several passengers whose stories are told in plaques next to their belongings, such as those of Adolphe Saalfled, an English perfume-maker who survived the voyage while his perfumes sank to the bottom of the sea. Somehow, though, 62 of the 65 vials of perfume were brought up unharmed, and in the gift shop you can buy perfume made to smell identically.

In the final room is a plaque with the names of all the passengers and their fates. Of the 2,224 people on board, 1,514 lost their lives. I looked up my man Chevr? and found that he was one of the 710 who survived.

Doing a little follow-up research, however, it's clear that Chevr? was far from unscathed. Soon after the Titanic's sinking, he returned home to France, never to sail again. He died less than two years later, at the age of 47.

"Paul Chevr? was a passenger on the ill-fated Titanic," read his obituary in the Montreal Gazette, according to the Encyclopedia Titanica. "Although he survived the shock, it is doubtful he ever recovered from it."

"Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit" is open through April 7, 2013, at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute.

A report by the Institute of Medicine released Thursday Dec. 6, 2012 said California?s stem cell agency has done a good job of supporting research but said improvements are needed. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, file)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? California has transformed into a major player in stem cell research, but the taxpayer-funded institute responsible has "significant deficiencies" in how research dollars are distributed, experts said Thursday.

A report by the Institute of Medicine found too many members on the board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine represented schools that won funding and recommended a restructuring to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest.

California voters in 2004 approved Proposition 71, a state ballot initiative that created CIRM, at a time when there were federal restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research and such work was opposed by some on religious and moral grounds because embryos have to be destroyed to harvest the cells.

The agency was given broad power to distribute $3 billion in bond proceeds to promising research. So far, it has distributed more than $1 billion to some five dozen universities that went mostly toward investments in new buildings and basic research.

The team of 13 experts that reviewed the stem-cell agency's operations did not judge the merits of individual studies because that was outside the scope of the report and it would have been too time-consuming and costly. But they raised serious questions about how grants were allotted.

The approval process "has some significant deficiencies which need to be improved upon in order to improve CIRM's credibility and transparency," said Harold Shapiro, an emeritus professor at Princeton University who chaired the report.

In a few short years, CIRM got off the ground and funneled research money with an eye toward stem cell therapies, turning the state into "an international hub of research and development in stem cell biology," the report said.

While the panel did not find any specific cases of conflict, it noted that the potential exists because of how the board is made up.

CIRM is composed of 29 members, mostly from academia. They have the dual role of providing oversight and day-to-day management. While the structure may have worked when CIRM was first launched and shielded it from political meddling, change is needed going forward, experts said.

"They're not broken but they're bent," said Sharon Terry, president of the nonprofit Genetic Alliance who was part of the panel. "They need some correction."

Among the recommendations: The board should remain at arm's length from the management team, focus on providing better oversight and should not decide what projects to fund. It also needs to be more diverse and include more representatives from industry and members with no stake in the grant-awarding process. Experts also favored the creation of an outside scientific group to give advice and expertise.

Some of the suggested changes would require legislative approval, but the panel felt they were needed to erase concerns about possible conflicts of interest.

In a statement, CIRM board chairman Jonathan Thomas said the agency has not had a chance to digest the report. Once board members talk it over with the panel next week, they will decide "on how best to proceed so that we can respond in as thoughtful a manner to the recommendations" as the panel did, Thomas said.

The latest report echoed several others in the past by other groups, which also called for a new governance structure.

"CIRM has not responded in a meaningful way to many previous public interest suggestions or to independent reviews," Marcy Darnovsky of the Center for Genetics and Society said in a statement. "We hope the agency will not continue that pattern."

Since cutting the first check in 2006, CIRM now finds itself at a crossroads. The federal research limits that existed when it was created have been relaxed and it recently shifted focus from basic research to funding projects that can swiftly begin human trials. Experts felt this goal was unrealistic and urged the agency to have a more balanced approach.

At its current funding pace, CIRM is expected to earmark the last grants around 2017, but since most are multi-year awards, it will stay in business until around 2021. It's currently deciding its future for when the money runs out.

The $700,000 report was sponsored by CIRM ? a customary practice for organizations seeking a review. The Institute of Medicine said sponsors have no influence on the fact-gathering process and are barred from reviewing drafts or weighing in on the report before publication.

Mars Rover Discovery Hype a Big Misunderstanding

SAN FRANCISCO ? The chief scientist for NASA's Mars rover Curiosity was just excited about the mission, and thrilled that one of the six-wheeled robot's key instruments was acing its first Red Planet tests. That's all he meant to convey.

But when an NPR story last month quoted John Grotzinger as saying that data recently gathered by Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, or SAM, were destined "for the history books," the world imposed its own interpretation.

Rumors begin flying around the Internet that SAM had perhaps detected complex organic compounds ? the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it ? on the Red Planet.

What Curiosity found

SAM's actual findings, which were revealed Monday (Dec. 3) in a press conference here at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, are intriguing but fall a bit short of the fevered speculation. SAM has detected simple, chlorinated organics ? chemicals containing carbon and at least one chlorine atom ? but it's unclear if the carbon within them is native to Mars or whether it hitched a ride from Earth, researchers said.

Grotzinger, a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena, said he meant to convey the excitement his team felt to see SAM ? a mobile chemistry lab that takes up more than half of Curiosity's science payload by weight ? working according to plan on Mars. [Organic Compounds On Mars - Did Curiosity Bring it? | Video]

He was surprised by the way his words rocketed around the Internet.

"We're doing science at the speed of science. We live in a world that's sort of at the pace of Instagrams," Grotzinger said during Monday's press conference. "The enthusiasm that we had ? that I had, that our whole team has about what's going on here ? I think was just misunderstood."

"What I've learned in this is that you have to be careful about what you say, and even more careful about how you say it," he added.

After some reflection, Grotzinger came to see some positives in the way the world latched onto his words.

"As the days went by and I thought about it further, my reaction was, I think it's terrific that this mission has such wide appeal and public interest," he said. "That's everything that I think we're hoping for, and the mission has delivered an unbelievable wealth of data."

Chlorinated compounds

SAM heats up soil samples and identifies the chemical species that boil out of the dirt. It's possible that the newly observed chlorinated compounds result from the decomposition of perchlorate, a chemical that NASA's Phoenix lander detected near the Martian north pole in 2008, researchers said.

"I think it's very likely that the chlorinated compounds that we saw ? chloromethane, dichloromethane and trichloromethane ? were actually produced as this perchlorate broke up and some very reactive chlorine was released, and then that reacted with carbon," said SAM principal investigator Paul Mahaffy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

"The thing we have to untangle is, what form of carbon was that reacting with?" Mahaffy added. "Was it some of the CO2 that was being released also, at the same time? Or was it from some other source of carbon?"

The Curiosity team is working on such questions right now, as the rover nears its four-month anniversary on the Martian surface. The $2.5 billion rover landed Aug. 5 inside Mars' huge Gale Crater, kicking off a two-year prime mission to determine if the Red Planet could ever have supported microbial life.

Why some teenagers more prone to binge drinking

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? New research helps explain why some teenagers are more prone to drinking alcohol than others. The study, led by King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) and published in Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) provides the most detailed understanding yet of the brain processes involved in teenage alcohol abuse.

Alcohol and other addictive drugs activate the dopamine system in the brain which is responsible for feelings of pleasure and reward. Recent studies from King's IoP found that the RASGRF2 gene is a risk gene for alcohol abuse, however, the exact mechanism involved in this process has, until now, remained unknown.

Professor Gunter Schumann, from King's IoP and lead author of the study says: "People seek out situations which fulfill their sense of reward and make them happy, so if your brain is wired to find alcohol rewarding, you will seek it out. We now understand the chain of action: how our genes shape this function in our brains and how that, in turn, leads to human behaviour. We found that the RASGRF-2 gene plays a crucial role in controlling how alcohol stimulates the brain to release dopamine, and hence trigger the feeling of reward. So, if people have a genetic variation of the RASGRF-2 gene, alcohol gives them a stronger sense of reward, making them more likely to be heavy drinkers."

Approximately 6 out of 10 young people aged 11-15 in England report drinking, a figure which has remained relatively stable over the past 20 years. However, binge drinking has become more common, with teenagers reportedly drinking an average of 6 units per week in 1994 and 13 units per week in 2007. In the UK, around 5,000 teenagers are admitted to hospital every year for alcohol-related reasons. Teenage alcohol abuse is also linked to poor brain development, health problems in later life, risk taking behaviour (drunk driving, unsafe sex) and antisocial behaviour.

The study initially looked at mouse models without the RASGRF2 gene to see how they reacted to alcohol. They found that the absence of the RASGRF-2 gene was linked to a significant reduction in alcohol-seeking activity. Upon intake of alcohol, the absence of the RASGRF-2 impaired the activity of dopamine-releasing neurons in a region of the brain called the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and prevented the brain from releasing dopamine, and hence any sense of reward.

The research team then analysed the brain scans of 663 14 year old boys -- who at that age had not been exposed to significant amounts of alcohol. They found that individuals with genetic variations to the RASGRF2 gene had higher activation of the ventral striatum area of the brain (closely linked to the VTA and involved in dopamine release) when anticipating reward in a cognitive task. This suggests that individuals with a genetic variation on the RASGRF-2 gene release more dopamine when anticipating a reward, and hence derive more pleasure from the experience.

To confirm these findings, the researchers analysed drinking behaviour from the same group of boys at 16 years old, when many had already begun drinking frequently. They found that individuals with the variation on the RASGRF-2 gene drank more frequently at the age of 16 than those with no variation on the gene.

Professor Schumann concludes: "Identifying risk factors for early alcohol abuse is important in designing prevention and treatment interventions for alcohol addiction."

Lenny Dykstra gets more prison time for bankruptcy fraud - latimes ...

?

Lenny Dykstra sentenced to three years in prison

Former New York Mets star and self-styled financial guru Lenny Dykstra, who was already sentenced to three years in state prison for a car scam, received 6 1/2 months for federal bankruptcy fraud after looting his mansion of valuables before creditors could get them.

Dykstra, who helped the New York Mets win the 1986 World Series, and became a? celebrity stock picker before his finances dissolved in chaos in 2009, has racked up numerous charges in recent years.

U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson also ordered Dykstra to pay $200,000 in restitution and to perform 500 hours of community service. The 6 1/2-month sentence was far lighter than the 30 months federal prosecutors had sought. At one point, Dykstra faced a potential sentence of up to 20 years before he agreed to a plea deal.

His fall from grace during the last two years includes a conviction for a car finance scam and separate charges of lewd conduct and assault with a deadly weapon.

According to federal prosecutors, Dykstra sold sports memorabilia and household items from his Ventura County mansion, including a $50,000 sink. Dykstra was barred from selling the items.

Nicknamed "Nails" by baseball fans for his raucous style on the diamond, the Garden Grove native turned to Bankruptcy Court in July 2009 to try to save his lavishly furnished Sherwood Country Club estate. He bought the property from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky for $18.5 million, at the height of the last housing boom.

An affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Ty Thomas lays out how federal investigators allege the baseball legend "sold many items belonging to the bankruptcy estate" and "destroyed and hid other estate items, depriving the estate of a combined $400,000 of assets."

Dykstra reportedly transferred dozens of items -- including chandeliers, mirrors, artwork, a stove and a grandfather clock --? to a consignment store, Uniques, on South Barrington Avenue in West Los Angeles. The owner of the store paid him cash for a U-Haul truckload of goods, according to the agent.

Despite warnings from a bankruptcy trustee's attorney, Dykstra ? moments after promising not to remove items from his Camarillo Airport office ? shifted numerous valuable pieces into a truck, according to the affidavit. People who received some of the items from Dykstra listed them on Craigslist and EBay.

The baseball legend has already been sentenced to three years in state prison. He pleaded no contest to grand theft auto and filing a false financial statement in connection with a scheme a judge described as an effort to steal cars that showed "sophistication, planning."

In January 2011, Dykstra, his accountant Robert Hymers, 27, and friend Christopher Gavanis, 30, tried to lease high-end automobiles from several area dealerships by allegedly providing fraudulent information and claiming credit through a phony business, prosecutors said.

Earlier this year he also got nine months in jail for exposed himself to a woman.

Beshear announces German automotive supplier establish ...

Gov. Steve Beshear announced Friday that iwis, a German automotive supplier, plans to establish its first U.S. manufacturing operation in Murray. The project will create 75 new, full-time jobs and entail a more than $12.5 million investment in the Commonwealth.

Gov. Beshear met with officials from iwis to discuss the potential project during an economic development trip to?Germany?during the summer.

?I was very optimistic after meeting with?iwis?officials in?Germany, and I?m thrilled with their decision to locate in?Kentucky,? Beshear said. ?This company?further enhances?Kentucky?s thriving automotive industry, and?75 jobs will have a powerful impact on the community, not only now, but for generations to come.?

Formed in?Germany?in 1916, iwis, a family-owned company, first began with success in the production of bicycle chains, and?eventually became the?iwis?Group, a global technology leader in high-quality automotive and industrial chains. The company now has more than 1,000 employees at 22 facilities worldwide and plans to operate a 119,000-square-foot facility, located off?U.S. Highway 641 North?in?Murray. Employees at the facility will manufacture timing drive systems for engines, and the?operation will start at the end of 2013 and will ramp up production in 2014.

Managing Director of iwis, Johannes Winklhofer, said on behalf of his team, including Martin Kohn with global production and Holger Frank with U.S. sales, they had to say thank you for the great support of Beshear and his team at the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development; without them iwis would not be here. Also, special thanks to Mark Manning and the members of MCEDC, whose support made this a very easy decision.

The company is?Kentucky?s most recent addition to an already dynamic and vibrant automotive industry, comprised of more than 440 motor-vehicle related establishments. Those facilities, which include four major auto assembly plants, employ nearly 72,000 people across?Kentucky.

The location of iwis also adds to?Kentucky?s success in attracting foreign direct investment to the state.?Kentucky?is home to more than 420 internationally based companies, including over 180 from?Europe. In 2011, nearly 23 percent of all new jobs and more than 30 percent of all capital investment announced in the state was a result of foreign direct investment.

Sen. Ken Winters, of?Murray, said he knows that a company with such a long history will find a good home here in?Murray, where small-town values, hardwork and dedication are cherished.

To encourage the investment and job creation in?Murray, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved the company for tax incentives up to $2.5 million through the Kentucky Business Investment program. The performance-based incentive allows a company to keep a portion of its investment over the term of the agreement through corporate income tax credits and wage assessments by meeting job and investment targets.

3 Lessons For Landlords And Property Owners - Real Estate ...

real estate investingLesson #1: Give your customers what is most important to them.

No more and no less.

Why no more? Because if it?s not important to them, it won?t matter anyway.? And it won?t help keep your residents longer. If you are meeting their 2 or 3 biggest needs, that can be enough to set you apart from other landlords. Think about it; even if you have the best service and all kinds of incredible benefits for residents but your properties are in an undesirable part of town, it can still be difficult to fill vacancies.

And no less? Well, obviously if you?re not meeting their most important needs you will have a very hard time keeping current residents and an even harder one attracting new residents to your property.

Lesson #2: Be where your customer is.

More and more that means having an online presence. For example, a simple website with all of the important info that will get visitors to pick up the phone or shoot you an email to set an appointment for a showing.

So if you?re thinking about creating a website for your units?

Here are some property website MUST-HAVES:

* Some high-resolution color photos

* The price displayed prominently

* A map of your location and surrounding neighborhood

* Benefits that make your place unique

* And your contact info: name, email and phone number

And if you have already have a website, consider adding some NICE-TO-HAVES:

* A free offer to visitors who give you their contact info

* 2 or 3 short videos of reviews from current residents and walk-through tours of your property, maybe neighborhood highlights

* SEO (search engine optimization)

* Targeted landing pages for specific keywords searches like ?new Rosewood apartment? or ?2BR Lakeview apartment?

But a website is just one example. The broader point: wherever your target audience is spending a lot of time, you need to be there too!

So ask yourself: where does my next (qualified) new resident shop? what is he reading? where or in what part of town does he work? where does he spend free time? Then, zero in on only the places that matter to reach your audience.

Lesson #3: Be grateful.

While in Tokyo, I had an unusual experience!? At one of the big train stations, there is literally a neighborhood of makeshift cardboard boxes with homeless people living inside.? Of course, it?s not unusual to see homeless people on busy street corners of major cities here in the US.? But in Japan for whatever reason, I rarely see them (maybe because they all stay at this station!)

And as I stood there waiting, one homeless man called out to me from his box.? But not for money.? Instead, he offered me some fruit.? Not sure if I looked lost or hungry but I was struck by his kindness and generosity.? And by this juxtaposition: not 10 feet above his cardboard home I could see a window with a happy couple sipping champagne at an upscale dining place inside the station.

Though I didn?t take the fruit, I did take a lesson from that man as I walked away: be grateful.? For your health, your family, your friends, good residents in your properties, whatever success you?ve had, and what you?ve accomplished so far.? Because you have it so good compared to so many others.

Do you have any ?Lessons? of you own?

Study contends Grand Canyon as old as dinosaur era

(AP) ? The awe-inspiring Grand Canyon was probably carved about 70 million years ago, much earlier than thought, a provocative new study suggests ? so early that dinosaurs might have roamed near this natural wonder.

Using a new dating tool, a team of scientists came up with a different age for the gorge's western section, challenging conventional wisdom that much of the canyon was scoured by the mighty Colorado River in the last 5 million to 6 million years.

Not everyone is convinced with the latest viewpoint published online Thursday in the journal Science. Critics contend the study ignores a mountain of evidence pointing to a geologically young landscape and they have doubts about the technique used to date it.

The notion that the Grand Canyon existed during the dinosaur era is "ludicrous," said geologist Karl Karlstrom of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

How the Grand Canyon became grand ? with its vertical cliffs and flat plateaus ? has been debated since John Wesley Powell navigated the whitewater rapids and scouted the sheer walls during his famous 1869 expedition.

Some 5 million tourists flock to Arizona each year to marvel at the 277-mile-long chasm, which plunges a mile deep in some places. It's a geologic layer cake with the most recent rock formations near the rim stacked on top of older rocks that date back 2 billion years.

Though the exposed rocks are ancient, most scientists believe the Grand Canyon itself was forged in the recent geologic past, created when tectonic forces uplifted the land that the Colorado River later carved through.

The new work by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and California Institute of Technology argued that canyon-cutting occurred long before that. They focused on the western end of the Grand Canyon occupied today by the Hualapai Reservation, which owns the Skywalk attraction, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends from the canyon's edge.

To come up with the age, the team crushed rocks collected from the bottom of the canyon to analyze a rare type of mineral called apatite. The mineral contains traces of radioactive elements that release helium during decay, allowing researchers to calculate the passage of time since the canyon eroded.

Their interpretation: The western Grand Canyon is 70 million years old and was likely shaped by an ancient river that coursed in the opposite direction of the west-flowing Colorado.

Lead researcher Rebecca Flowers of the University of Colorado Boulder realizes not everyone will accept this alternative view, which minimizes the role of the Colorado River.

"Arguments will continue over the age of Grand Canyon, and I hope our study will stimulate more work to decipher the mysteries," Flowers said in an email.

It's not the first time that Flowers has dug up evidence for an older Grand Canyon. In 2008, she authored a study that suggested part of the eastern Grand Canyon, where most tourists go, formed 55 million years ago. Another study published that same year by a different group of researchers put the age of the western section at 17 million years old.

If the Grand Canyon truly existed before dinosaurs became extinct, it would have looked vastly different because the climate back then was more tropical. Dinosaurs that patrolled the American West then included smaller tyrannosaurs, horned and dome-headed dinosaurs and duckbills.

If they peered over the rim, it would not look like "the starkly beautiful desert of today, but an environment with more lush vegetation," said University of Maryland paleontologist Thomas Holtz.

Many scientists find it hard to imagine an ancient Grand Canyon since the oldest gravel and sediment that washed downstream date to about 6 million years ago and there are no signs of older deposits. And while they welcome advanced dating methods to decipher the canyon's age, Karlstrom of the University of New Mexico does not think the latest effort is very accurate.

Karlstrom said it also defies logic that a fully formed canyon would sit unchanged for tens of millions of years without undergoing further erosion.

Geologist Richard Young of the State University of New York at Geneseo said his own work suggests there was a cliff in the place of the ancient Grand Canyon.

Flowers "wants to have a canyon there. I want to have a cliff there. Obviously, one of us can't be right," he said.

Whatever the age, there may be a middle ground, said Utah State University geologist Joel Pederson.

Researchers have long known about older canyons in the region cut by rivers that flow in a different direction than the Colorado River. It's possible that a good portion of the Grand Canyon was chiseled long ago by these smaller rivers and then the Colorado came along and finished the job, he said.

The Sietch Blog ? Green Home Building and Current Real Estate ...

In my last post, I have explained some of the green benefits of commercial modular construction, and its relevance in terms of providing an easy and sustainable solution for building energy efficient & Eco-friendly schools buildings, business offices, and healthcare facilities. In today?s post, I would like to explore green home building as it pertains to the construction of new homes in the US. But fist, I would like to examine the current state of the real estate market, which greatly influences the demand for new housing construction, and renovation of the existing homes.

Current State of the US Real Estate Market

Although, we are still suffering from numerous consequences of the housing bubble including declining real estate values, and people being on a fence about purchasing new homes, the need for new housing is still there, and will continue to grow. It is estimated that we need about a million and a half of new homes built annually in order to keep up with the population growth in the US. This may become true once the housing market stabilizes.

Currently there are over two million of unsold homes in the inventory. It would take roughly about 6 months to sell them. Distressed ? foreclosed homes account for about a third of all the existing home sales. These homes sell at great discounts, but will require a significant amount of reconditioning and home remodeling work done in order to bring them back to shape.

Because the inventory of homes for sale is constantly being replenished due to new homes and foreclosed homes coming onto the market, it remains unclear how long it will take to fully clear/sell the back log in the inventory of unsold homes. What is clear though, is that the number of unsold homes is gradually shrinking, but the real estate prices still continue to fall, and this trend may continue for a while. This is one of the reasons why many potential buyers are still wary of purchasing a new home.

The up trend in existing home sales

?But existing home sales have increased by 13 per cent over the past six months and by 38 per cent from their low in mid-2010, so there?s clearly an underlying recovery in place.?

Current New Home Building Rate

The annual new home building rate is currently at about 700,000 new homes being built per year in the US. It is plausible to predict that this rate will continue to increase once the real estate market stabilizes. No one can tell exactly when this is going to happen, but the current new home building trend is positive.

Green Home Builders are in demand by Environmentally Conscious Consumers

Many large and small home builders are building green and energy efficient homes designed to be energy efficient, eco-friendly and cost-effective for new homeowners.

Energy Efficient Home Certification Programs

Energy Star Qualified New Homes

If you are aiming for living in an energy efficient and eco-friendly home that provides energy savings to you as a homeowner, and has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared conventionally constructed homes, then look for energy star certified new homes featuring all of the following:

  • Properly Insulated and well Sealed Home ? the level of insulation in your new home must be adequate, and it must be properly installed. This will make your home more air-tight and better insulated from unwanted heat gain or loss. This will also reduce the load on your HVAC systems, which will result energy savings for you as a homeowner and will also benefit your community.
  • Dual-Pane Energy Star qualified Windows help prevent heat from entering the home via sunlight through the window, and cool air from escaping a home. These windows will help reduce your overall utility costs.
  • Energy Star qualified HVAC Systems ? this one is pretty obvious, your energy star qualified home will have Energy Star certified heating and cooling equipment installed in it.
  • Energy Efficient Products & Light Fixtures ? Energy Star certified homes will have eco-friendly products including energy efficient lighting fixtures such as CFLs, and LEDs installed in it.
  • Green Home Building LEED Certification Program

The US Green Building Council has a stringent set of standards that a home builder must meet in order to earn LEED (?Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design?) certification credits for their newly built homes.
LEED credits are awarded to homes that meet a certain standard for energy and water efficiency, its indoor air quality, the sustainability of building practices used in its construction, and the impact of the construction on the surrounding community and environment. Builders submit particular projects to the LEED board for review, which then certifies projects that meet their exceedingly stringent standards. The program maintains a list of all new home projects that have achieved LEED Certification on their website.

How To Quit Smoking Without Gaining Extra Weight | New Health ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

About 55% of smokers gain roughly 3 kilograms after they quit smoking. This increase in weight is caused by two reasons:first: is that Nicotine increases the rate of digestion of any food. to stop providing your body with Nicotine makes food burning slower than it was, and this provides a good opportunity for the body to store some of food in the form of fats.Second: is that smoking affects the minute parts of the tongue which are responsible for tasting, and thus stopping smoking improves the tasting sense which lead on to eat more amounts of food.

Medical studies assures that about 10% of smokers fear to quit smoking because they're terrified of the kilograms gained by stopping smoking, and because of this not to be your excuse not to quit smoking. I'm going to present some tips to help you stop smoking without gaining any additional weight or any issues.

The choice of finishing smoking has to be accompanied with another call, which is practicing sports to help ease the indicators of withdrawal from one hand and to withstand the increase in weight, on the other hand, as well as enlarging the volume of muscles in the body, as it is known that the muscles are burning up fat.

There also are some drinks that aid in reducing the strain results from smoking cessation like Orange Juice.

You can quit smoking using some of the following steps:* Stop smoking at once; it is proved that stopping smoking continuously is usually futile.

    * Choosing a selected time to start quitting smoking, as not to be experiencing heavy pressure.

    * Some foods and beverages increase the tendency to smoking so you have got to momentarily cease taking them such as coffee, tea, chocolate and red protein.

Ultimately try and get rid of any packet of cigarettes, lighters, or any other thing related to smoking in your home.
